Last night we were able to give the orphanage children a
real thrill. We were able to take them
to a movie in an actual theater. For
almost all of them this is the first time in their lives that they have ever
been to a movie. Being a child who lives
in an orphanage, simple things such as taking in a movie are never an
option. This was a special opportunity
for the kids that we were so blessed to be a part of.
The movie we chose was “Despicable Me 2.” We felt it would be easy enough for the kids
to follow. The movie is in English with Indonesian
subtitles. The older students could
follow along by reading and the younger ones would still be able to enjoy it
because so much of it is slap stick humor.
The first thing you have to understand about the city we are
in is the lack of people of a different skin color. When you go anywhere you are “the show.” Get 25 or so people of a different color
walking together through a mall and you are creating a scene. We were stopped several times by people
wanting pictures and to trying talk to us.
It was classic. The stares and
giggles we got as we walked by were awesome.
It makes you think that you are a celebrity.
The next best thing is seeing the look of the ticket counter
girl when you purchase 51 movie tickets at once. She kept asking if I was serious. She even called for back up from a supervisor
to make sure that something was not lost in translation.
Finally looking back and seeing the sheer joy of both our
kids and the orphans was so moving. To see
the orphan kids with their heads on our kids shoulders and belly laughing was
truly a special sight to see. They were
so grateful we could do this for them.
The director of the orphanage kept saying how great it was that we could
do this for them. Little does he know we
are the ones who are benefiting from this.
